A Small Napoleonic Prisoner Of War Bone Model Of A 2nd Rate Ship Of The Line Anonymous; ca. 1800 A very fine small scale bone model with the hull built up from the solid and planked over in bone. The gun decks are strips of bone with the gun ports cut to the waist. The bottom of the model is planked over in narrower pieces of bone and each piece is held in place with copper pins which have oxidized slightly with time. The deck of the model is from sheets of bone veneer.The deck of the model is simply detailed with pin and fife rails, anchors, belfry, balconies, hatches and other ornaments. The model is fitted with a pair of blackened brass anchors, a figurehead of a Roman warrior which has remnants of polychrome, carved and pierced quarter galleries and transom. The model is very well rigged wuith three masts, standing and running rigging, turning blocks, deadeyes, lift lines, bracing lines and numerous other pieces of rigging. The model is displayed on a two tiered polychromed base made from bone with pierced and carved fencing. 11½ x 3½ x 9¾ in. (29.2 x 8.9 x 24.8 cm.) model on base.
