A SMOOTHLY POLISHED ABSTRACT-LOOKING PENDANT OF THE GOUYUN OR “HOOKED-CLOUD” TYPE Katalognummer: JAK0318-003 Jade China Late Neolithic period, Hongshan culture, c.3500-2500 BC 勾雲形玉佩 - 新石器時代晚期, 紅山文化, 約公元前3500-2500年 LENGTH 14.5 CM – WIDTH 6.8 CM 長14.5 厘米 -寬 6.6 厘米 This thin ornament is basically formed by a large central curl from which five smaller hooked extensions protrude: each element of the abstract-looking pendant is highlighted with smooth wide grooves that follow the carved design and that make the jade glitter in the light. The suspension hole in the upper central area of the jade is strongly slanted, as the perforations on Hongshan jades often are. The richly textured and semi-translucent stone is light green in colour, though the high iron content and other inclusions generate the gentle beige tone and the dramatic brownish striations. In shape and type of material, this ornament is very similar to one published in F. Salviati, 4000 Years of Chinese Archaic Jades, Edition Zacke, Vienna 2017, no.14. The closest examples from excavations come from tombs of the Niuheliang ceremonial site in Jianping county, Liaoning province: see Yang Xiaoneng (ed.), The golden age of Chinese archaeology. Celebrated discoveries from the People`s Republic of China, New Haven and London 1999, no.18 and Zhang Shuwei and Li Xiangdong (eds.), Shikong chuanyue: Hongshan wenhua chutu yuqi jing pin zhan 時空穿越: 紅山文化出土玉器精品展 (Through time and space: Unearthed jade articles of the Hongshan Culture), Beijing 2012, p.37. Startpreis 起始價: € 3.000 Schätzpreis 估計/估算: € 6.000 Expertise: Prof. Filippo Salviati From an Austrian collection All jades in this catalogue have been professionally examined, authenticated and described by Prof. Filippo Salviati. Professor Salviati teaches Chinese and Korean art at Sapienza University in Rome, in the Italian Institute of Oriental Studies. He is a world expert on archaic Chinese jades, having released multiple publications and being cited by renowned auction houses such as Sotheby’s. The microscopic images made available here, show that the weathering of the jade has occurred over a long period of time. Furthermore in the magnification one can reconstruct the workings of the jade. The two aforementioned criteria are exactly what counts in the authentication of archaic jades – the difficult and elaborate workmanship by hand and the subsequent weathering of the jade over centuries. The microscopic enlargements show how the patterns were ground out in many small steps, sometimes over months, and that the weathering actually occurs above the carvings, meaning it occurred after the jade was completed.
