A SOUTH ARABIAN ALABASTER STELE
CIRCA 1ST CENTURY B.C./A.D.
A SOUTH ARABIAN ALABASTER STELE CIRCA 1ST CENTURY B.C./A.D. The centre carved with a recessed panel with centrally facing draped figure holding an object to their chest, remains of two line inscription above, mounted, 5¼ in. (13.3 cm.) high; a Roman bronze votive plaque, the obverse with relief bust, the reverse with five lines of incised Greek inscription, suspension loop above, circa 2nd-3rd Century A.D., 3½ in. (9 cm.) high max.; a group of Romano-Egyptian terracotta figures including: a figure of the dwarf god Bes, legs missing, 5½ in. (14 cm.) high; a concubine figure, seated with legs bent beneath, ears pierced, 5 in. (12.5 cm.) high; a fragmentary figure of Baubo, 5¼ in. (13 cm.) high; and a fragmentary rat-headed figure, wearing pendant necklace, 3¼ in. (8.2 cm.) high, all circa 1st-3rd century A.D.; and a further group of antiquities including: a Romano-Egyptian terracotta lantern decorated with the stylized figure of a comic actor with exaggerated facial features and rounded stomach, remains of red pigment, 6½ in. (16.5 cm.) high; a fragmentary pottery 'St Menas' pilgrim-flask, the body decorated with the figure of St Menas as orant, flanked by two stylized kneeling camels, the reverse with the 'Blessing of St Menas' Greek inscription within a wreath, circa 450-550 A.D., 2¾ in. (7 cm.) high; and various Egyptian faience bead necklaces, mostly composed of green and blue cylindrical and disc-shaped beads, all restrung, various periods, 28 in. (71 cm.) long max.(a lot)
