A THREE-COLOR SPLASHED GREEN ‘SANDWICH’ GLASS SNUFF BOTTLE Katalognummer: SN0618-043 The slightly swirled, opaque olivegreen glass body suffused with fragments of transparent emeraldgreen, opaque and dark cinnabar-red as well as opaque realgar-orange splashes, with several scattered air-bubbles China 1730-1780 Glass with fragments of other colors rolled into the surface during production were a standard type at the Imperial glassworks at Beijing, which is also frequently referenced to as ‘sandwich’ type, providing an endless variety of color combinations. This rare and early version, with its three colors on a opaque green ground relates it to a small group of Imperial overlay snuff bottles which also combine this particular green with cinnabar-red, also of the swirling nature of the red here. Shape: Bulbous round form Hollowing: Standard Mouth, neck and lip: Cylindrical neck, slanted lip, flat top with a wide mouth and deep inner cylinder in a somewhat asymmetric place Base: Flat, almost invisible, bottle does hardly stand Design, marks, school: Attributed to Beijing Palace Workshops Stopper: Carnelian cabochon with neatly incised, gilt bronze mounting Height of the bottle with stopper: 6.6 cm. Width of the mouth: 10 mm. Width of the neck: 19 mm.
