A turquoise, sapphire, diamond and cultured pearl bracelet and brooch by Cartier Paris, the clasp with a central cluster claw set with an oval mixed cut sapphire above a bombe mount of turquoise and 20 brilliant cut diamonds, approximately 2.00 carats total, removable to form a brooch, signed Cartier Paris, numbered 070689 and 6588, with French poincon and Cartier SCA maker's mark between two crescents, the snap clasp with brilliant cut diamond triple hoop shoulders, approximately 3.00 carats total, signed Cartier Paris, with French poincon and Cartier SCA maker's mark between two crescents, attached to a 15 strand 4mm cultured pearl bracelet Louis Francois Cartier opened his first shop in the rue Montargueil in Paris in 1847. His son Alfred took the business over in 1874, and the firmÆs success in supplying wealthy clientele with fine jewels enabled it to move to the rue de la Paix in 1899. When AlfredÆs three sons joined the firm at the turn of the 20th century, they propelled Cartier to one of the leading jewellers of the Belle Epoque period, with their promotion of CartierÆs æGarland StyleÆ. This international expansion saw the eldest son Louis based in Paris, controlling Cartier designs and quality. The two other brothers sought out wealthy international clients in Russia, with Pierre making selling trips in 1904 and 1905; Jacques opening a branch in London in 1906, and Pierre opening the first New York branch in 1909. A branch in St Petersburg also opened in 1909. CartierÆs success of this period was reinforced by the fact that all the leading jewellers of Europe and the USA followed their lead in producing Garland Style jewels. During the first half of the 20th century CartierÆs innovation in design continued through the talents of the Cartier brothers in conjunction with the ideas of designers and directors such as Charles Jacqueau Jeanne Toussain and Pierre Lemarchand. Pierre Cartier and his team in Paris ensured Cartier remained at the forefront of jewellery design by seeking inspiration from Ancient Egypt, India, China and the Islamic World, which created an unmistakable style of the multi coloured jewels of the Art Deco period which continued to appeal to the worldÆs leading jewellery connoisseurs. Between the 1930Æs and the 1960Æs Cartier evolved these themes, and always keeping ahead of fashion, began to produce the æGreat CatÆ jewels, which included the beginning of the Panthere style beloved of Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor. Today, in keeping with the ideals set down by the three Cartier brothers, the firm remains a global leader in the retailing of fine jewellery, watches and objects of discerning quality, emphasising style and craftsmanship.
