A very fine and unusual Mughal style Chinese celadon jade teapot and cover. 19th Century or earlier. The teapot of an even, translucent celadon tone, compressed form with a fluted body and scroll handle, is very thinly and finely carved in shallow relief and decorated with stylized lotus floral and foliate scroll motifs to the body, handle and spout and enclosed by bands of Chrysanthemum petals with a finial formed as a bud to the cover. It was during the 18th century that the Emporor Qianlong (1736 - 1795) took a distinct interest in the jade carvings of Mughul India and in turn this gave way to some novel developments during the later part of his reign in which traditional Chinese forms became transmuted by pierced openwork and floral scroll motifs of India resulting in some very unusual hybrid designs. 8 in (20.3 cm) height. 8 in (20.3 cm) length.
