A very fine Japanese chiselled iron tsuba, late Edo/Meiji period (19th century). Of oval form, the openwork hira inlaid with gold, silver and copper is decorated with five sages in a bamboo grove with pine branches and leaves, pierced with both a kozuka and kogai hitsu ana both later filled with copper. Inscribed with five characters partially translated as reading So:Mune Yo. 3.2 in (8.1 cm) diameter.
