With swamped blued octagonal barrel rifled with seven grooves and with gilt-brass fore-sight, fire-gilt brass folding leaf back-sight chased in relief with symmetrical scrollwork, breech signed in gold along the top flat and inlaid with symmetrical gold scrollwork, bright tang numbered '1' and cut with further symmetrical scrolls, shaped bright flat bevelled detented lock signed in gold (detent seized), engraved with foliated strapwork and inlaid with gold scrollwork on the tail, the cock, steel and steel-spring chiselled en suite, the first retained by a screw with chiselled and gilt brass head, moulded figured full stock carved with scrolls and interlaced strapwork in low relief along the fore-end, at the grip, and behind the cheekpiece, the last set with a fire-gilt brass plate engraved with foliated strapwork, fire-gilt brass mounts finely cast and chased in low relief with scrolling foliated strapwork against punched grounds, comprising shaped side-plate with a staghunting scene within a wooded landscape involving a horseman firing his flintlock pistol at a stag, large crowned escutcheon surmounted by a separate baldachin, charged with an oval portrait bust almost certainly that of Christian Augustus (1723-84) or Federick Magnus (1723-38) wearing the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, between two putti each holding a cor de chasse above a lady and a gentleman each in contemporary attire centred on a winged cherub's head above a hound, the baldachin surmounted, on other side of the barrel tang, respectively by a standing figure of Diana and a sportsman, each framed by drapes and with pierced scrollwork above and beneath, rounded butt-plate stamped 'No. 1' and decorated on the tang with a sportswoman in a landscape holding a falcon, her gundog by her side, spur trigger-guard with a female portrait bust on the bow, sliding patch-box cover with a pierced staghunting scene in a landscape involving three sportsmen, one aiming his flintlock rifle using a tree as a support, engraved faceted ramrod-pipes, the rearmost with a recumbent hind in a landscape, and swelling fore-end cap, set trigger, engraved iron trigger-plate, and associated horn-tipped ramrod, in exceptional original condition throughout, retaining nearly all its blued and fire-gilt finish 70 cm. barrel
