A very finely executed and historically important near-contemporary 1/12 scale model (made 1864) of the Robert Stephenson & Co. 'A' Class 2-2-2-0 'long boiler' locomotive of 1846-7, the first class to be built for the newly formed London and North Western Railway -- 13½ x 23¾in. (34.3 x 60.4cm.) Built by J Gardiner in 1864 (see biographical notes for further details), the model has two working outside cylinders with inside valve chests and slide valves. The working link motion is controlled from a reversing lever on the footplate but there is no retaining 'quadrant' to the lever. Two working eccentric-driven feed pumps supply water to the boiler via side-mounted clacks and with air bleeding cocks operated from the footplate. Water is controlled by plug cocks on the suction side of the pumps, again controlled from the footplate. There are drain cocks to each front cylinder cover and to the firebox on both sides above the foundation ring. The model has a working safety valve fitted with 'Salter' type spring balance and there is a bell whistle with plug cock.
