A very large Victorian silver oversized lidded tankard. Modelled in the form of an 18th century tankard. The fluted bun cover is applied with an openwork thumbpiece and a centrally engraved inscription enclosed within a bow tied laurel wreath. The cylindrical, fluted body applied with an ivory insulated scroll handle terminating with a heart shaped leaf and supported on a bellied and splayed circular base of matching design is incorporated to one side with a centrally decorated scrolling foliate cartouche enclosing the Hicks family crest. The interior is gilt lined. Mark of Thomas Smily, London 1864. 12.2 in (31 cm) height. Weight: 2730 grams. Provenance: The family crest engraved within the cartouche depicting a bucks head and wreath with the motto 'Tout En Bonne Heure' (All in good time) is of the Hicks family and hence of both British and American historical interest. Previously sold at Bonhams for ᆪ4,800 in 2012. Additional notes: The cover is inscribed 'A Goblet of Burgundy fill fill for me. Give those who prefer it Champagne: but whatever the wine a bumper must be. If we ne'er drink a bumber again. Now.
