A VERY RARE GENTLEMAN'S STAINLESS STEEL ROLEX OYSTER PERPETUAL "BAKELITE" GMT MASTER BRACELET WATCHCIRCA 1958, REF. 6542 AN EXAMPLE FROM A BATCH OF WATCHES RECALLED BY ROLEX IN 1960 TO HAVE THE RADIUM IN THE BEZEL AND DIAL REPLACED WITH NON-RADIOACTIVE PAINT, AFTER A FAMOUS LAWSUIT WAS MADE AGAINST THEM FOR THE DANGEROUS LEVEL OF RADIOACTIVE RADIUM USED, THIS EXAMPLE IS ACCOMPANIED BY A LETTER OF PROVENANCE FROM ROLEX ON 29TH MARCH 1960, ADVISING THE OWNER "THAT THE WHITE PAINTED DIAL AND BEZEL HAS ARRIVED FROM SWITZERLAND"Movement: 25J, automatic chronometer, base cal. 1030, signed Montres Rolex S.A., numbered.Case: Diameter approx. 38mm, Oyster case, signed Montres Rolex S.A., dated III.1958, numbered 39x,xxx, original bakelite bezel with radium replaced with paint, Rolex crown.Bracelet: Rolex Oyster riveted expandable bracelet, numbered 6636/80, dated 2/67.CONDITION REPORTDial: Original dial in fair condition, showing signs of age.Movement: Working at present.Case: In very good condition, with some small scratches due to general use, bakelite bezel in fair condition showing signs of age and cracks.Strap/Bracelet: In excellent condition, with light scratches due to general use.
