A VERY RARE SET OF THREE EARLY SILVER-MOUNTED PAINTED LACQUER COVERED TOILET BOXES WESTERN HAN DYNASTY Comprising a large circular lian and two small cosmetic boxes: the sides of the large lian and cover with alternating bands of silver and broad bands of black lacquer finely painted in red with attenuated wave-like scroll incorporating various animals, including deer, bears and birds as well as human beings, and with narrow borders of scrolls enclosing a double cross symbol, the base raised on a broad, shallow foot set back from the edge and covered in black lacquer painted in red with a narrow decorative border, the stepped, domed cover similarly decorated but with ridged borders separating the broad and narrow lacquer bands of decoration, and centered by a silver quatrefoil bordered in red lacquer and surrounded by alternating figures of bears and humans, the interior of the box and cover covered in red lacquer with narrow bands of linear scroll at the rims painted in black and partially filled in with a lighter color also used for a single-line border just below; the small lian and the small rectangular covered box of similar design and decorated with bands of simplified scroll, interiors in plain red lacquer; chips to interior rim of large box showing the thin wood frame, some wear to lacquer and silver bands--large lian 6 3/8 in. (16.2cm.) diam.
