Beschreibung:

A Voyage Round the World; but more particularly to the North-West Coast of America: Performed in 1785, 1786, 1787, and 1788, in the King George and Queen Charlotte, Captains Portlock and Dixon. London: John Stockdale and George Goulding, 1789. xii, 384, xl pp. Frontispiece portrait of Portlock; large folding chart; 18 further engravings (maps, charts, views and other plates) including 5 hand-colored ornithological plates. 4to (290 x 234 mm). Later full polished calf, red morocco spine label. Title-page and frontispiece toned, spine sunned, new endpapers, internally about fine and well-margined. First edition "of the principal account of the first commercial voyage to the Northwest Coast and the first English voyage to visit Hawaii after that of Captain James Cook" (Forbes). Portlock and Dixon visited the Falkland Islands and made a long stay at Hawaii before surveying the American coast. Hill calls this survey "the most important result of the voyage ... Portlock was a veteran of Captain Cook's third voyage to the Pacific. His vivid descriptions of encounters with the American Indians and the Russians serve to broaden the perspective provided by William Beresford's and Dixon's narrative...." (Hill p 239). The bird plates are not usually hand-colored, as they are in this copy. Forbes 177; Howes P497; Lada-Mocarski 42; Sabin 64389. See illustration.
