Abdul Rahman Jami (d.AH898/1484-5 AD): Diwans Written by Shah Mahmoud al-Nishapuri Herat or Qazvin, Rajab 956 AH/1549-50 AD renowned love lyrics of Jami, entitled Fatihah al-Shabab and Wastah al-'iqd, manuscript on gold-sprinkled green, blue, pink and yellow gold sprinkled paper, the margins of differently coloured paper, 250ff. plus three flyleaves, each with 15ll. of extremely fine black nasta'liq arranged in two colums, gold intercolumnar and interlinear divisions between black rules, , gold margin with black rules, light blue inner margin and dark blue outer margin, white naskh heading on illuminated panel, opening double folio superbly illuminated in various colours, (slight damage and repair), preceeding folio with prepared shamsa outline, f.64v. and 65r. each with illuminated shamsa , f65v. and 66r. with illuminated cartouche, heading and central panel, the margins exquisitly painted in pen and ink with a variety of genre scenes, a few folios loose, very minor repairs, final folio signed Shah Mahmoud [al-] Nisapuri and dated 956, two seal impressions and a brief inscription dated 1051 below the text suggesting the book was in the Mugal imperial collection and was seen by the emperor Shah Jahan in AH 1051, contemporary red lacquer binding with a variety of trees and floral sprays together with wild boar, wolves, dragons, flying duck and simurghs drawn in black, gold and light red, surrounding a central medallion a lion and deer combat group, black and gold cloudband border, the brown morocco doublures with central stamped gold medallion and pendants within a rope-pattern border The bindings are by the same hand as, and are almost identical to a pair sold in these rooms as lot 168, 8th October 1991. There are similar pairs in the British Museum exhibited in 1983 as cat. no.4, and also on a volume of Yusuf and Zulaika dated 1569, now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford(Greaves 1).
