Title: Abraham Lincoln: An Essay Author: Schurz, Carl Place: Boston and New York Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Date: 1897 Description: 117 pp. Photogravure frontispiece portrait. 7x4½, bound in full polished green calf, gilt leaf vignettes on corners and spine, two gilt-lettered morocco spine labels, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Fifth Edition. With the clipped signature of Abraham Lincoln (apparently from a letter) signed "A.Lincoln" on a 1½x½" tan piece of paper (with tiny brown residue spots), which is affixed to a larger white card, mounted under Lincoln's frontispiece portrait. Also, signed by the author as "Secretary" of the Interior, of which Schurz served under U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes. Carl Schurz (1829-1906) emigrating to the United States in 1852 due to his involvement in the 1848 German Revolution. He was an active campaigner against slavery and would join forces with the Union Army at the start of the American Civil War. Schurz helped negotiate with European governments on behalf of Abraham Lincoln and later served under General John Fremont, eventually becoming Brigadier General of the 3rd Division of the Army of Virginia. He also took part in many of the major Civil War battles, including Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. Lot Amendments Condition: Spine and edges faded to brown, front joint starting to split, small nicks; hinges starting to crack, front flyleaf loosely laid in, gift inscription for Rev. Frederick Burgess dated 1899; about very good. Item number: 165335
