ACCOUNT ROLL -- England, 14th Century. Manuscript on vellum, a compotus roll of John Vans, servant to Robert Darcy, for the manor of Stalyngburgh [Stallingborough, Lincolnshire], for the half year ending at Michaelmas, 16 Edward II [1322], in Latin, in an English cursive documentary script, recto and verso of a scroll composed of two sewn membranes, together 810 x 165mm (a few losses to right margin, the largest c.25 x 25mm, and other holes, some yellowing and staining). The account roll lists both receipts, totalling £27-3-4 including from the sale of corn, oats, beans and other crops, and from livestock and poultry products, and outgoings, totalling £26-14-4, including running costs (listing extensive repairs to buildings including to the windows of the lord's hall), purchase of stock and other typical expenses. On the verso is an 'exitus' or profit list for each heading, and a 'Compotus instauri' or stock check, noting for example that 20 capons have been sold, leaving four.
