Engraved portrait of Lord Grenville by H. Meyer after W. Owen on india paper (foxed), 114 hand-coloured plates, comprising 64 aquatint views by Bluck, Stadler, Hill and others after Pugin, Mackenzie, Westall and others; 17 hand-coloured stipple- and line-engraved costume plates and 32 hand-coloured stipple- and line- engraved portraits of the founders of the various colleges. (Two founders plates with faint foxing, an intermittent marginal rust-spot in the second volume, overall very clean and fresh.) Contemporary blue straight-grained half morocco decorated in gilt and blind, presumably bound from the original parts, with stab holes preserved (some light rubbing); cloth slipcases. Provenance : acquired at Parke-Bernet, 15 May 1943. FIRST EDITION, LARGE-PAPER COPY, EARLY STATES: plates 1,13, 50, 78, 84 and 94 in first state; plates 39 and 74 in second state, with overslips.
