(7¼ x 5 in.), docketed on verso , in good condition. [ With :] NATHANIEL FRYE. Autograph letter unsigned to Former First Lady Louisa C. Adams Washington, D.C., 21 August 1847. 2¼ pages, 4to , questioning Mrs. Adams about whether or not her father-in-law, John Adams nominated George Washington for the appointment to Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army. JOHN ADAMS AND WASHINGTON'S APPOINTMENT IN 1775. The former First Lady passes on facts concerning John Adams's role in the appointment of George Washington as Commander of the Continental Army: "Seeing by the Papers that there is a dispute on the subject of the nomination...of Gen[era]l Washington to Congress; I send you an extract from the Life of the Gen[era]l...'...John Adams ..moved that the Army, then besieging the British Troops in Boston, should be adopted by Congress as a Continental Army; and...it was his intention to propose to the Office of a Commander in Chief of the Army a gentleman from Virginia, who was at that time a Member of their own body. His remarks were so pointed that all present perceived them to apply to...Washington, who upon hearing this reference to himself retired from his tent and withdrew!! When the day for the appointment arrived, the nomination was made by Mr Thomas Johnson ..' and seconded by...Adams of which he informs his Wife in a Letter published (I think) in one of Niles' Registers. I send you this extract as I take a great interest in this question..." Together 2 items . (2)
