ADAMS, LOUISA CATHERINE, First Lady . Letter signed ("Louisa Catherine Adams") to "the Citizens of Walpole [Mass.]," Washington, D.C., 17 March 1848. 1 page, 8vo, integral blank, mourning stationery [ with ] Autograph free frank ("L. C. Adams") on envelope addressed to Edmund L. Clap of Walpole, orange-red circular "Free Washington D.C." handstamp, mourning border, nearly intact black wax seal on backflap. Very good. (2) A VERY RARE FRANK, WITH A LETTER Condolences on the death of a President: "With heartfelt emotion I have received the Resolutions adopted by the Citizens of Walpole, in honor of the memory of my late husband [John Quincy Adams had died on 23 February 1848]. The sympathy shown by all the wise and good in the land, afford me all the relief that can be experienced upon the loss of a beloved relative and friend......" Louisa Catherine Adams's franks are extremely rare; in 1944, Edward Stern ranked her second in rarity only to Margaret Taylor (no examples known) and believed the sole example to be the one in his own collection (see his "Supplement to the History of the 'Free Franking Privilege in the United States," in Collectors Club Philately , vol.23, no.1 (January 1944), pp.4, 12. Since that date, one or two additional examples have come to light. (2)
