ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) VERA MINT. 1930. 80x52 inches. Courbet, Paris. Condition B+: restored losses, repaired tears, creases and discoloration in margins; creases in image. A minimal and pure yet extremely sophisticated poster in which suggested images, and strong color usage combine to sell the product; a mint-flavored aperitif. Against a blue gradation, changing from light to dark, Cassandre suggests the corner of a table (also reminiscent of a cool Alpine peak covered with snow) and the outline of a glass (almost identical to the wine glass he used in his study for the poster for Willi's Wine Bar, 1935). The radiant and refreshing mint taste of the drink is conveyed via a halo of green airbrushed around the glass. Two yellow straws protrude from the glass, and not only catch the viewer's eye and draw attention to the glass, but also evoke the bright summer's sun. Along with the strong blue background, the sharp yellow clearly evokes the sky and sun, which is the perfect mood for Veramint: a summertime drink to enjoy under a sunny sky. This is the larger of two versions. Mouron p. 76, no. 153, Suntory p. 66, no. 40.
