ADORATION OF THE MAGI, an initial 'E' cut from a choirbook, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Venice, c.1430] 136 x 125mm. Initial staves of pale pink with leaves of red, blue and green against a ground of burnished gold, in the infill a compact composition of the Holy Family and the Three Magi painted in the same colours, on the verso two lines of text in brown-black ink in a round gothic bookhand between two lines of music of square notation on a four-line stave of red (small pinholes at centre top and bottom, minor losses of gold from the ground and small touches of repaint to the background hills). This colourful initial is the work of Cristoforo Cortese (fl.1409-39), the leading Venetian illuminator of his day. It almost certainly came from a Gradual where it opened the introit Ecce advenit dominator for Mass on the Feast of Epiphany. with JUSTINIANUS: leaf with Book IX, xxii, 14 to xxiii, 1 from a glossed copy of the Codex , 322 x 225mm [Italy, probably Bologna, 13th century], written in a small gothic bookhand with rubrics in red and initials of red and blue (once used as a pastedown, upper edge slightly cropped affecting first line of commentary on verso, edges of verso darkened).
