AESCHYLUS Τραγωδιαι ζ... Tragoediae VII... [edited by Piero Vettori]. [Geneva]: Henri Estienne, 1557 4to (240 x 160mm.), woodcut printer's device on title-page, without final blank leaf, late eighteenth-century red morocco gilt in the style of Roger Payne, gilt edges, early annotations (washed), occasional light browning, s6 repaired at foot (not affecting text), extremities slightly rubbed FIRST COMPLETE EDITION of the works of Aeschylus; six of the plays were first published by Aldus in 1518, and the seventh, Agamemnon, previously known only from a defective text, was published here in full for the first time. The printing uses two sizes of Estienne's grecs du roi, based on the writing of the Cretan scribe Angelos Vergikios and carved by Claude Garamond "Remarkably nice copy: probably Roger Payne's binding" (pencil note on flyleaf).
