AESOP. The Fables of Aesop Paraphras'd in Verse: Adorn'd with Sculpture by John Ogilby . - Aesopics: or a Second Collection of Fables, Paraphras'd in Verse: Adorn'd with Sculptureby John Ogilby . London: Thomas Roycroft for the author, 1668. 2 volumes, 2 o (420 x 270 mm). 2 engraved frontispieces, titles printed in red and black, 150 engraved plates of which 88 are after Wenceslaus Hollar the remainder by Stoop and Barlow. (Some light staining, a few leaves with marginal tears not affecting plates or text.) Contemporary marbled English paneled calf gilt, bindings not quite uniform (rebacked). Provenance : Purchased at Swann Galleries, 21 February, 1962, lot 4. FIRST EDITION of Aesopics , second edition of Ogilby's Fables . Part of the collection of Aesop's works appeared in 1651; however, the first edition of the complete text with engravings did not appear until 1665. The plates for Aesopics are in the EARLIEST STATE before numbers; most copies of this work feature plates with numbers. This edition of Ogilby's translation of Aesop is among the finest illustrated books of the 17th-century, and this series represents the best of Hollar's work as an illustrator. His preference for ornament and rich costume of the period are evident in these plates. Stoop and Barlow were the most proficient English engravers of their time, and were especially noted for their book illustrations. Wing A-697, and A-698. (2)
