After Melchior de Hondecoeter (Dutch, 1636-1695) Roosters, Ducks, and Hawk in a Landscape Signed or inscribed indistinctly " ... d' Hon..." l.l. Oil on canvas, 40 x 50 in. (101.5 x 127.0 cm), unframed. Condition: Trimmed of tacking edges and lined, puncture to u.l. quadrant stabilized with wax on the reverse, craquelure, skinning. N.B. The work at hand was reviewed via high resolution digital images by experts at the RKD (Netherlands Institute for Art History) who suggest that it is a copy of a painting by Melchior de Hondecoeter known through an auction sale catalogue from Cassirer, Berlin, December 7, 1926, lot 68. It was concluded that in comparing both works, which are virtually identical in size, the Berlin painting shows a more vivid expression of the rooster, a more precise and delicate rendering of the feathers, and a more convincing three-dimensionality.
