AGA MUHAMMAD 'ASHIQ (D. AH 1181/1767-68 AD): DIWAN QAJAR IRAN, 19TH CENTURY, THE BINDING SIGNED MUHAMMAD JA'FAR BIN NAJAF 'ALI, QAJAR IRAN, DATED AH 1279/1862-63 AD Poetry, Persian manuscript on paper, 86ff. plus 2 fly-leaves, each folio with 11ll. of fine black nasta'liq in clouds reserved against gold ground and arranged in two columns with double gold intercolumnar rule, text panels ruled in gold and polychrome and within margins with extensive gold and polychrome illumination, a roundel in the upper margin of each page with the Qajar emblem, opening bifolio with elaborately illuminated headpiece, four further similar headings within the text, first and final folios with later owner's notes, minor areas of staining, in lacquer binding decorated with scenes from the tale of Khusraw and Shirin, one side dated 1279, the doublures decorated with elegant Qajar youths Text panel 5¾ x 3in. (14.6 x 7.6cm.); folio 8 x 5 1/8in. (20.4 x 13.1cm.)
