AGOSTO, Giovanni; TESTA, A. b/w photos of Italian yachts during the fascist era. Genoa, c. 1933-23,8 x 29,5 cm and 30,5 x cm, stamps on verso. Loose, held together in a folder. Interesting and rare account of Italian yachts and their passengers during the fascist regime of Mussolini. Photos of the SS Giulio Cesare: "initially a liner of the Navigazione Generale Italiana, which was later operated by the Italian Line. The ship was used to transport first class, second class, and tourist-class passengers" (Wikipedia); the SS Conte Grande: "a Lloyd Sabaudo Line ocean liner built in by Stabilimento Tecnico Triestino in Trieste, Italy, to service the transatlantic passenger line between Genoa, Italy, and New York City" (Wikipedia); the SS Conte di Savoia: "an Italian ocean liner built in at the Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico, Trieste. Originally ordered for the Lloyd Sabaudo Line; however, after a merger with the Navigazione Generale Italiana, the ship was completed for the newly formed Italia Flotte Riunite" (Wikipedia), the MN Vittoria, the mothership of the Lloyd Triestino; the SS Roma also an ocean liner "built for the Italian shipping company Navigazione Generale Italiana of Genoa by Ansaldo shipyard in Sestri Ponente" and the sister ship to MS Augustus; and SS Rex an ocean liner launched in "originally built for the Navigazione Generale Italiana (NGI) as SS Guglielmo Marconi its state-ordered merger with the Lloyd Sabaudo line meant that the ship sailed for the newly created Italia Flotta Riunite". The photos show a dining hall, a cabin, a living room, a chapel, a boxing match, a fencing game, a party, a concert, sport games on deck etc. Among the photos a couple of identifiable people: Edda Ciano, Countess of Cortellazzo and Buccari and daughter of Mussolini, Countess Calvi di Bergolo and the eldest daughter of King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy, the French international soprano Ninon Vallin, etc.
