John Floyd (1748-1818) (3), Henry Herbert, 10th Earl of Pembroke (1734-1794), George Augustus Eliott, Baron Heathfield (1717-1790), Sir William Fawcett (1728-1804), Frederick Augustus, Duke of Brunswick-Luneberg, Robert Crauford (1764-1812), Sir William Sydney Smith (1764-1840), William Eden 1st Baron Auckland (1744-1814), Sir William Erskine, (1769-1813), John Whitelocke (1757-1833), Sir James Murray (1751?-1811) (2), Sir Adam Williamson (1736-1798), Sir Charles Colville (1770-1843), and letters signed from William, Duke of Brunswick, Count P.A. Rumiantsev, Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville (2), Frederick Augustus, Duke of York (2), Edward Augustus, Duke of York, various places, 27 October 1762 - 4 December 1802, together approximately 63 pages, mostly 4to or folio , and 8 other documents, all mounted or tipped into album, black morocco-backed cloth. George Ainsley was born at Bordeaux of Scottish descent, and joined the Horse Grenadier Guards in August 1755, transferring later to the 15th Light Dragoons (Elliott's Horse), was an aide-de-camp to George III, and appointed Lieutenant Governor of the Scilly Isles in 1783. Among this collection of letters from notable military figures Count Rumiantsev writes from 'Kouyjouk Kainardgi' on 22/11 July 1774 on friendship and the peace with the Turks, John Floyd in 3 letters Strassburg and Vienna, 9 June 1776 - 10 July 1778 , commenting on the state of the French, Austrian and Russian armies, George Elliott from Gibraltar on 7 January 1785, Sydney Smith in Constantinople on 22 February 1793 on his observations in that city, Dundas, Eden and Erskine reporting on the situation in Holland from March to July 1793, John Whitelocke from Jamaica on 1 September 1793 on the situation in the West Indies, Adam Williamson from Port au Prince on 18 September 1795 introducing a Captain Lowry, Charles Colville from Alexandria on 27 September 1801 on the army in Egypt, and the Duke of Kent from Gibraltar on 2 December 1802 on regimental clothing.
