II, Paris, 1998, no. 1414 (illustrated p. 456). Lynda Thomas possessed a warm, generous, and kind spirit dedicated to making the world a more harmonious place. She was a dedicated philanthropist for the arts, specifically Jazz programs, and a passionate advocate for the promotion of international dialogue and diplomacy. She received her BA from Washington University in St. Louis and her MBA from Tulane University in her hometown of New Orleans. She was gifted with an acute mind for business, becoming a Senior Manager and CPA at Deloitte Haskins and Sells in New York and London before leaving the accounting industry to become a private investor. Thomas was a passionate advocate for the advancement of international diplomacy, including serving on the board of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) in Washington, DC. She traveled extensively with the Pacific Council on International Policy and the NDI for promotion of international dialogue in anti-democratic countries, including North Korea, South Sudan, Myanmar, and Cuba. Her diplomatic endeavors also include serving as an election monitor in Tunisia for parliamentary elections in 2011, and for their first post-revolution direct presidential election in 2014. She was also an avid supporter of the fine and performing arts, having served on the boards of the Irvine Barclay Theatre and the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana, California, as well as Backhausdance, a Southern California contemporary dance company. In addition, Thomas was a trustee and longtime supporter of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz, formerly known as the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz in Washington DC and Los Angeles. Passionate about access to arts education and mentorship programs for school children in marginalized communities, her guidance was invaluable in expanding the institute's programs. To celebrate her contributions, the Lupin Foundation provided a grant to the Institute in the name of Lynda Thomas to present a yearlong jazz education program at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. Thomas also possessed a keen eye for paintings and sculpture of exceptional quality and taste. Her collection of American and European Modernism includes works from the titans of the movements such as Milton Avery Charles Burchfield, Elie Nadelman Albert Gleizes Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso We at Bonhams are honored and thrilled to be offering works from her collection in our sales.
