"A natural successor to Motherwell's other great book with Alberti ( A la pintura , 1972), the present sequence of prints illustrates a poem written by Alberti as an homage to Motherwell during the painter's 1980 Barcelona retrospective. Motherwell drew his images directly onto prepared mylar and acetate sheets utilizing grease pencils, paintsticks, and alcohol tusche applied with brushes or a bamboo pen. These were later transferred to aluminum plates for lithography" (Phillips/Zwicker, Grolier/ American Livre de Peintre 35).
