LIMITED EDITION, number 29 of 51 copies for sale signed by Motherwell on hand-made paper from a total edition of 71. One of the outstanding American livre d'artiste , published by Tyler Graphics. "A natural successor to Motherwell's other great book with Alberti ( A la pintura , 1972), the present sequence of prints illustrates a poem written by Alberti as an homage to Motherwell during the painter's 1980 Barcelona retrospective. Motherwell drew his images directly onto prepared mylar and acetate sheets utilizing grease pencils, paintsticks, and alcohol tusche applied with brushes or a bamboo pen. These were later transferred to aluminum plates for lithography" (Phillips/Zwicker, Grolier/ American Livre de Peintre 35). Johnson/Stern The Logan Collection 170 ("El Negro was the most ambitious project undertaken by Tyler and Motherwell, incorporating nineteen original lithographs"); Manet to Hockney 164.
