Title: Album of photogravures of a European Tour Author: Ensenberger, Frank G. Place: Publisher: Privately printed Date: c.1910 Description: Comprises: Aboard Ocean Liners. * England - Ireland - Scotland. * Holland. * Switzerland.* Germany, 2 volumes. * Italy, 2 volumes. * The Azores, Madeira, Gibraltar. Together, 9 volumes. Approximately 550 photogravure plates. Most sepia-toned, some toned in other colors. No Text. Average size, 3x5" images on 10½x8¾ paper. Leather bindings, gilt-lettered. Fantastic photographic record of the Grand Tour by an American. Ensenberger was an Illinois merchant who made this tour apparently in the summer of 1910. His photographs are much better than the average amateur, with particularly good attention to local costume and characters. There is also the wonderful series of about 40 photographs documenting the Atlantic crossing, and many scenes from his driving tour, including a sequence of the party driving through the Alps. This lot includes a small research archive relating to Ensenberger, with a photocopy of a 1910 article describing his photographic project. Lot Amendments Condition: Bindings a little dry with some chipped spine ends, some vols. with hinges repaired; marginal dampstain in 2nd vol. of Germany (in image in first two plates), very few scattered spots; a few photographs misprinted or with damage in the negative; overall, very good or better.
