ALEXANDER HAMILTON (d.1732?) A New Account of the East Indies. giving an exact and copious description of the situation, product, manufactures, laws, customs, religion, trade, &c. of all the countries and islands which lie between the Cape of Good Hope and the island of Java. London: printed for C. Hitch and A. Millar, 1744. 2 volumes, 8° (200 x 127mm). 9 folding engraved maps, 11 plates (1 folding). (Small tear to lower margins of B3-6 in vol.I). Contemporary English speckled calf, spines in six compartments with raised bands, the bands flanked by pairs of gilt fillets, orange/brown morocco lettering-pieces in the second compartments, volume numbers in gilt in the third, the others blank (heads of spines slightly chipped). A fine set: this is the second London edition of this important work, first published in Edinburgh in 1727. The work covers 'the whole of the Orient' (Hill) from Ethiopia to Japan. Cf. Hill (2004) 765. With: JOHN HENRY GROSE (fl.1750-1783). A Voyage to the East-Indies; began in 1750; with observations continued till 1764 ... The second edition, greatly improved. London: printed for the Author, sold by S. Hooper, 1766. 6 folding etched plates. Contemporary lightly-speckled calf, spines in six compartments with raised bands, the bands flanked by pairs of gilt fillets, red morocco lettering-piece in the second compartments, volume numbers in gilt in the third. Provenance : Hon. Charles Hamilton (1704?-1786). An immaculate copy of the second edition of this work, written by the brother of the celebrated antiquarian. Grose had remained in India for 14 years.
