Alexandra Exter (Russian, 1882-1949) Costume Design for Aeschylus's Tragedy Seven Against Thebes (Septem Contra Thebas) Signed "Alex. Exter" l.r., stamped "DOUANES/ EXPOSITION/ PARIS" and inscribed "No. 56" in pencil and "...A. Exterova/ Sedm pred Theb...Kostym [Costume]" in ink on a label in Czechoslovakian on the reverse. Gouache on paper, sheet size 20 1/4 x 12 7/8 in. (51.4 x 32.7 cm), framed. Condition: Masking tape hinged to window mat. Provenance: Through the collection of George Reynolds Freedley (New York theater critic and founder of the Theater Research Collection of the New York Public Library at Lincoln Center); Skinner Inc., May 12, 1983, Sale 898, Lot 120. N.B. We wish to thank Jean Chauvelin for his assistance with cataloguing the lot, and the present work will be included in his forthcoming catalogue raisonne on Exter.
