ALFONSO X, King of Castile . Tabulae astronomicae [Edited by Johnannes Lucilius Santritter]. Venice: Johannes Hamman, 31 October 1492. Chancery 4to, 219 x 160 mm. (8 11/16 x 6 3/16 in.), early vellum over flexible pasteboard, title lettered along smooth spine in a neat gothic hand, new endpapers, occasional light foxing or browning, small faint dampstain to upper margin, occasional show-through or offsetting from ink marginalia, 2 small repairs to last leaf affecting printed tabular rules only . Collation: A-D8 e6 a-h8 i-k6 (e2 signed "*2"). 114 leaves, unfoliated. Types: 120G, 5:70G, 50G, 127G(?), 74G(?). 43 lines. 15-line white-on-black foliated initial on A4r, a few 8-line black-on-white initials, white-on-black 7- and 5-line initials elsewhere, a few initial spaces, woodcut head-piece on A4, a few smaller head-piece ornaments in tables. Second edition of the Alphonsine Tables, based on the eleventh-century Toledan tables of the Cordoban astronomer al-Zarqali, including a few new (thirteenth-century) observations but using the same format and "retain[ing] the Ptolemaic system for explaining celestial motion" (DSB); this edition with Santritter's Canones in tabulas Alphonsi and an exchange of letters beween Santritter and Augustinus Moravus. Provenance : Heavily annotated throughout in Latin and Spanish, by Pedro Martinez de Torre and Frater Hieronymus, the latter in 1506, according to an inscription below the colophon: "per legit fr. hiero a.d. 1506 die 7 augusti ho[ra] 4. post me licentiatus petrus martinez de torre", the annotations including tables, diagrams and several figures reducing the tables to the meridian of Burgos, notes on the Martinez de Torre family on verso of last leaf -- Harrison D. Horblit, bookplate (sale, Sotheby's, Part 1, 10 June 1974, lot 26, 380, Francis Edwards).
