ALKEN, Henry and James BARENGER illustrators. The Sporting Repository, containing Horse-Racing, Hunting, Coursing, Shooting, Archery, Trotting and Tandem Matches, Cocking, Pedestrianism and Pugilism. London: for Thomas McLean, 15 January-15 June 1822. 6 original parts, 8° (250 x 153mm). Hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece and 18 hand-coloured aquatint plates after H. Alken and J. Barenger by G. and T. Hunt. Extra-illustrated with two original pen, ink and watercolour designs by Alken, one for the frontispiece, ‘Meeting at Cover’ (110 x 185mm), the second for ‘Greyhounds’ (178 x 111mm) in part 3, both mounted on buff paper. Original wrappers, the front cover printed with title, woodcut vignette, motto and imprint, the inside front cover with contents, and the rear cover with advertisements (all rebacked, one or two corners creased), the parts in green cloth chemise, and the two watercolours in two separate matching chemises titled in gilt, green and tan morocco pull-off case by the Lakeside Press, Chicago, spine with raised and gilt decorated bands, gilt title lettering. FINE, GEM-LIKE PLATES, IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS, EXTRA ILLUSTRATED WITH ORIGINAL WATERCOLOURS BY ALKEN FOR TWO PLATES. This ‘rare and valuable magazine’ is an unashamed celebration of popular sports and a mine of interesting information. The issue number and price of 5 shillings is given at the head of each wrapper. The vignette repeated on all of the covers shows three triumphant huntsmen drinking a bumper, with the motto ‘No joys can compare to the sports of the field.’ Schwerdt II p. 212.
