ALLIONI, Carlo (1728-1804). Flora Pedemontana sive enumeratio methodica stirpium indigenarum Pedemontii. Turin: Joannes Michael Briolus, 1785. 3 volumes, 2° (404 x 261mm). Half-titles, engraved dedicatee's portrait after Molinari, titles printed in red and black with engraved allegorical vignette, 92 ENGRAVED PLATES by Pietro Peyrolery after Francisco Peyrolery, numbered in Roman numerals. (Lacking the two additional plates 'i' and 'ii' required by Stafleu, plate LXXIII browned, plate LXXXI spotted, one or two text leaves browned.) Contemporary half calf, blue morocco lettering-pieces (joints slightly cracked). FIRST EDITION of one of the earliest Italian regional floras, by "il Linneo piemontese" (Stafleu). Allioni was professor of botany at Turin University and correspondent of many leading naturalists of his day, including Linnaeus. The Biographie Générale describes him as "praticien éclairé et . . . un grand observateur" and states that "Allioni doit être placé parmi des botanistes qui ont fait progresser la science, en ajoutant un certain nombre de plantes à celles qui étaient déjà connues". The Flora Pedemontana is his most important work: the first two volumes list 2,800 plants divided into 12 classes, and the third volume contains 92 plates illustrating 237 species. The general scheme of the work was influenced by Haller's Historia stirpium indigenarum Helvetiae inchoata , published in Berne in 1768. Nissen BBI 18; Stafleu 100; Dunthorne 6; Great Flower Books p. 47. (3)
