ALS Autograph letter signed ("C Babbage") to Mr. Robinson, informing his recipient that he has the "work of Newman on the Soul" (possibly referring to Francis William Newman's work of 1849 entitled The Soul, her Sorrows and Aspirations), giving his review of the "doctrines", writing: "Some I do not understand or perhaps they cannot be understood but only felt. If this is the case they must be a kind of modified inspiration", small tear to upper margin of fold, faint crease marks to corners, two pages, 16mo, Dorset Street, Manchester Square, 15 January 1858. BABBAGE STRUGGLES TO UNDERSTAND THE SOUL. Charles Babbage, polymath and computer pioneer, writes to an aquaintance reviewing a theological work about the history of the soul and admitting that he did not fully understand it. He summarises that perhaps it "cannot be understood but only felt". Babbage was fascinated by religion from a scientific viewpoint and in this letter we see him touching upon his understanding of spirituality.
