Original linen-backed cloth, front cover lettered in gilt (endpapers browned, top-edge spotted); in a cloth folding box together with the title below. 2 page octavo autograph letter signed, dated Madeira 13 December 1954, and 1 page octavo typed letter signed, dated Rhos-On-Sea 17 May 1955, both from Coburn to Glass, and a small printed catalogue, all laid-in. Provenance : Alvin Langdon Coburn (letter and inscription presenting the book to:) -- Douglas Glass. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, WITH TWO SIGNED LETTERS LAID-IN, INSCRIBED BY COBURN TO DOUGLAS GLASS. A photographer for the Sunday Times, Glass photographed Noel Coward, Pandit Nehru, Max Beerbohm Eleanor Roosevelt, and many other eminent contemporaries. Coburn's first letter agrees to a sitting with Glass, mentions the recent publication of the edition of Edinburgh illustrated by Coburn, and the forthcoming broadcast of Coburn's recording discussing his portrait of Mark Twain. The second letter discusses arrangements for the sitting with Glass, and a request from Coburn: "also, I would very much like to have a shot at your good self, if you don't mind letting me do it with your camera?"
