AMBROSE, Saint (Bishop of Milan). Les trois livres des offices... Ensemble quelques Epistres du mesme Autheur... Le tout traduit en François par M. Iaques Tigeou. Paris: Guillaume Chaudiere, 1588. 12° (139 x 80mm). Ruled in red throughout. (Lower blank margin of title excised and replaced.) Contemporary Parisian olive morocco gilt, covers with triple fillet border with cornerpiece design of leafy olive stems emanating from floral tools, central oval cartouche formed from two intertwining leafy branches, the flat spine filled with curling leafy stems, g.e. (ties lacking, spine slightly discoloured). Provenance : Discalced Carmelites, Charenton (inscription '...ex dono Dmini. des lendes 1655'); Henri Burton (red morocco booklabel). First edition of this translation, in a fine binding, ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE ATELIER OF CLOVIS EVE See Fairfax Murray French I, 55 for an almost identical binding (attributed to Clovis Eve plate opposite p.46).
