AMERICA-PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN] EXQUEMELIN, [ALEXANDRE OLIVIER]. Bucaniers of America: ... London: for William Crooke, 1684. First edition in English. The three parts bound into full brown mottled calf by Mansell, spine gilt extra, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. 9 1/8 x 6 7/8 inches (23 x 17.5 cm); [12], 115, [1], 151, [1], 124, [12] pp., with nine plates (three folding). Binding exceptionally neatly rebacked retaining original spine, one leaf with a small paper defect, all in all an extremely large, fresh copy, the bookplate of Thomas Knatchbull (the third), engraved date 1702, neatly mounted on title verso, the small book label of the Waite collection on the rear pastedown. A classic account of the exploits of the buccaneers, pirates who (in some cases, such as that of Morgan) had a quasi-legal status, sailing under letters of marque. This work was first issued in Dutch in 1678 (though the English first edition is based on a Spanish edition of 1681). In a somewhat ironic turn, the publisher was successfully sued by Morgan for defamation; he won a judgment of 200 pounds, a large sum for the time. Exquemelin's narrative is sometimes found bound with Basil Ringrose's account of Sharpe's Pacific voyage, published in 1685 as a second volume (though it is connected only by subject matter), but this is not present here, and it is Exquemelin's narrative that is of primary importance. The author voyaged with Morgan as a barber-surgeon, and appears to have been in his inner circle. Sterling I; Goldsmiths' 2549; Church 689; Hill pp. 99-100 etc. C
