Volume I (only). 4to, old calf, upper cover detached, library mark on spine; early ownership inscription on title, some light browning and staining. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST VOLUME OF THE FIRST LEARNED SOCIETY IN THE AQMERICAN COLONIES. Vol. I was reprinted in 1785 and continued serially thereafter. Sabin 1181; Evans 11959. Covers a wide variety of agricultural and geographical, as well as scientific and medical topics. Included among the papers is Edward Antill's important "Essay on the cultivation of the vine, and the making and preserving of wine, suited to the different climates in North America." The volume contains many important papers in connection with the transit of Venus. The American achievement in observing the transit of Venus and in making this work known to European scientists was the major factor in gaining a new recognition for American Science. Contributors to the first volume include: David Rittenhouse John Ewing, Benjamin Rush, Owen Biddle Benjamin West and others.
