FORAY ON THE NEW YORK FRONTIER. An important copy of orders issued by Clinton directing a raid into Tory-held territory north of Schenectady, New York. Captain Carlile is informed that he will be joined by a guide and a group of Indians and that he should procede to Galloway where he is to have excess provisions "immediately seized for the use of your troops." He is ordered to have the inhabitants evacuated, to have their effects removed and "the Houses to be set on fire", but to have anyone "friendly to our cause" sent to "Ball's Town." Carlile is also ordered to inform any inhabitants of the region that they will "be treated in a similar manner" if they are found harboring deserters or the enemy. -- CLINTON. Clinton discusses the nomination of officers in his command and the movement of troops. -- GATES, Horatio (1728-1806). Autograph letter signed ("Horatio Gates") to Richard Peters, Hillsboro, 28 December 1780. 2¼ pages, 4to . Gates writes Peters, Secretary of the Continental Board of War, four months after his humiliating defeat at the Battle of Camden. Gates reports that he will send the "proper Returns" shortly and that he wishes "the Cavalry were in better plight" as "The Regiments of Baylor, and late Blands, are near one half sick. I have shifted them into more wholesome quarters." Gates blames the condition of his army upon a recent excursion: "why, or wherefore, they ever went to Halifax I know not...I imagin'd Baron De Kalb had order'd them there, but he assured me, before his Death, to the contrary." Gates disastrous defeat at Camden spelled the end of his military career. -- GATES.
