Charles Lee Esqr. Major General of the Continental-Army in America.
London [but Augsburg]: C. Sheperd [but J. M. Will], 31 October 1775. Mezzotint portrait (360x240 mm, plate size), stated to be after a portrait by Thomlinsen, engraved by Johann Martin Will with wide margins. Condition: foxing and toning principally to the margins, minor wormholes in the lower margin. The image depicts Lee, dressed in military uniform, with a firing canon in the background and a flag with the slogan An Appeal to Heaven. The portrait was executed and printed very early in the conflict with the expectation that Lee would play a major role in the impending war, though bears little resemblance to contemporary accounts of Lee's actual appearance. This version of the portrait was reissued in Augsburg from the British original.
