Autograph letter signed with initials to Colonel George De Neale, apologizing that he cannot fulfill his request as he is travelling to the West Indies.
Baltimore: 31 January 1812. 1 page on a folded sheet with integral address leaf (250x195 mm). Condition : usual hold from opening, short edge tear, some staining. Lee (1756-1818) American Revolution General, Governor of Virginia and father of Robert E. Lee. During the first decade of the 19th century, Lee foolishly invested in several speculative schemes and ended up in debtor’s prison. It is possible that the Lee was here attempting to leave for the West Indies to avoid creditors.
