AMERICAN REVOLUTION]. [MONTGOMERY, Richard (1738-1775), General, Continental Army ]. KEPPEL, George, Third Earl of Albemarle (1724-1772). British General . Manuscript document signed ("Albemarle"), "Martinique, On Board His Majesty's Ship the Ramus," 6 May 1762. 1 page, oblong folio (9¾ x 13 3/8 in.), ON VELLUM, paper seal in upper left corner, soiling and fading. FUTURE CONTINENTAL GENERAL RICHARD MONTGOMERY RECEIVES A PROMOTION FOR SERVICE IN THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR. An outstanding document which certifies Richard Montgomery's promotion to the rank of Captain during his service in the British Army. Montgomery, son of a member of the Parliament, entered the British Army in 1756 with the rank of ensign in the 17th Regiment of Foot. His subsequent orders in America insured his involvement in several of the most important battles of the war including Louisbourg, Lake Champlain and the capture of Martinique in the West Indies. Here, on board ship, Albemarle signs the commission which rewarded Montgomery for his loyal service: "To Richard Montgomery Esq r: By Virtue of the Power and Authority to me given by His Majesty I do hereby Constitute and appoint you to be Captain of Company in His Majesty's Seventeenth Regiment of Foot...the Hon b l e Major General Robert Monckton Colonel." George Keppel, Third Earl of Albemarle, was a Lieutenant General in the British Army and Governor of Jersey. Montgomery's brief but eventful service in the Continental Army ended with his death at the seige of Quebec.
