American School, Early 19th Century Pair of Portraits, probably Mr. Calvin and Mrs. Jerusha (Matthewson) French, Proctorsville, Vermont Unsigned, the gentleman inscribed on the reverse "Portrait of Mr. Calvin French aged 28 yrs D 1827." Oil on panel, 26 1/2 x 20 1/2 in., unframed. Condition: Gentleman with alligatored surface and retouch in several areas, lady with enhanced background and retouch to dress. Note: Calvin French, born in Proctorsville, Vermont, in 1799, married Jerusha Matthewson and had two children. Calvin apparently lived his whole life in Proctorsville, and died there in 1879.
