[AMERICANA]. A group of 4 titles, including: THOMPSON, Waddy. Recollections of Mexico. New York and London: Wiley Putnam, 1846. 8vo. 4 pp. publisher’s advertisements at rear. Publisher’s brown blind–stamped cloth, gilt–lettered spine (light rubbing at ends and upper joint, occasional browning or spotting generally concentrated to preliminary and terminal quires). Provenance: Cromwell Whipple, son of Thomas Whipple (contemporary signature on ffep dated June 18th, 1846). FIRST EDITION, EARLY ISSUE with dedication leaf. Sabin 95537. –– OROZCO Y BERRA, Manuel. Geografia de las Lenguas y Carta Etnográfica de México… Mexico: J. M. Andrade and F. Escalante, 1864. 4to. Half– title, large hand–colored folding map of Mexico at rear (some pale foxing). Later half morocco over pebbled boards, raised bands, gilt titling in compartments, top edge gilt (a tiny bit of rubbing to spine); slipcase. FIRST EDITION of what Sabin describes as “not only the best publication about the geography of Mexican idioms, but also a standard for all books on the geography of languages in general” and includes linguistic material with an extensive article on Apache dialects. Numerous full–page plates and maps including frontispiece (pale spotting). Original green cloth gilt, brown coated endpapers (a tiny bit of rubbing at ends, front inner hinge cracked). Provenance: Major Henry Wheaton Rivers, Providence, 1814–1868 (signature on title dated 1867). FIRST EDITION from the library of a Civil War Union Army officer, 1st Rhode Island Infantry Assistant Surgeon. –– FOSSETT, Frank. Colorado: Its Gold and Silver Mines, Farms and Stock Ranges, and Health and Pleasure Resorts. New York: C. G. Crawford, 1879. 8vo. Engraved frontispiece, 540 in–text illustrations and numerous foldouts including bird’s–eye views, maps, and plans. Publisher’s green cloth stamped in black and gilt, brown coated endpapers.
