THE "WIGWAM EDITION." THE LIFE, SPEECHES, AND PUBLIC SERVICE OF ABRAM [sic] LINCOLN, TOGETHER WITH A SKETCH OF THE LIFE OF HANNIBAL HAMLIN. REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES FOR THE OFFICES OF PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. New York: Rudd & Carleton, 1860. 7 1/2 by 4 1/2 inches in original printed/pictorial wrappers; 117 pages (2) pgs. of ads. With "beardless" Lincoln portrait on cover and again as the frontispiece. A nice example of a Lincoln item that has become difficult to find in collector's condition. The "Wigwam" was a temporary structure built in Chicago in 1860 to attract large conventions, such as that of the Republican Party. The structure was built in a month (of wood), and did not survive the 1871 fire. This imprint is generally taken to be the first printed biography of Lincoln, although others have also claimed the title. John Scripps of the Chicago Press and Tribune ("Tribune Tract No. 6") claimed to be the earliest to have Lincoln's approval of his biography. Howard's biography, printed in Cincinnati, was another contender, with an image of the "Wigwam" on the back, and is nearly as rare as this one. As Barton (1920: 387) notes, this squabble really highlighted how little was known about this candidate at the time of his nomination. Barton, William E. The Soul of Abraham Lincoln. George H. Doran Company, 1920. Monaghan, Lincolniana 92. Streeter Sale III: 1744. Wessen, Campaign Lives of Abraham Lincoln, #1. From the Ernest Wessen bibliography: “Everything which I have found lends support to the claim that the Wigwam Edition was indeed the ‘first in the field’. . . . The error [Abram for Abraham] has provided at least three Lincoln bibliographers with a little amusement. It does not seem to have occurred to them that the blunder . . . might have some bibliographical significance. . . . Undoubtedly the Wigwam Edition was the most popular life issued during the campaign. To this day it retains its popularity among Lincoln collectors, and is rightfully the keystone to any collection of Lincolniana.” Condition: Some chips/loss to the backstrip and corners of the upper wrapper; modest internal foxing/spotting, but otherwise a Very Good example of a scarce campaign biography.
