λ An 18th century German kingwood and rosewood table cabinet, oyster veneered, with a pair of doors enclosing an interior inlaid with 16th century Augsburg marquetry, with an arrangement of eleven drawers around a central cupboard, the drawers decorated with architectural views, the central cupboard with a female figure in 16th century costume, enclosing two further drawers and a secret drawer, the interior doors decorated with reclining male figures with buildings, an interior scene and scrolling leaves and flowers, above three further drawers, one fitted for pen and ink, the base with a secret drawer, with brass side carrying handles, fitted on an early 19th century Regency rosewood cupboard with a pair of panel doors enclosing two adjustable shelves, 123.5cm high, 108.3cm wide, 47cm deep. The marquetry on this cabinet depicting architectural views and figures was probably influenced by the etchings of Virgil Solis (1514-1562). He was one of Nuremburg's most prolific and influential printmakers and illustrators. Read more »
