AN AMUSING CARVED JADE, DIAMOND, AMETHYST BEAD AND GOLD NECKLACE, BY WEBB Designed as a large carved nephrite Mayan face, with oval-cut ruby and circular-cut diamond eyes, wearing a cabochon amethyst, circular-cut diamond and sculpted hammered gold headdress, joined to five strands of graduated amethyst beads, mounted in platinum and 18K gold-- 17 ins. long Signed by Webb David Webb jewelry is characterized by bold colors and large gemstones, often utilizing carved gem materials as the center piece for the design. The nephrite face on this necklace is taken from an ancient Mayan mask that, most likely, represents a god whose image graced a temple. Nose, open mouth and arched eyebrows are carved into the surface while large diamond-set eyes with ruby pupils stare out at the viewer. An elaborate headdress set with cabochon amethysts surrounds the face. David Webb jewelry is designed to be part of an entire look. According to Janet Zapata in "An American Classic Remains Hot" Jewelers' Circular-Keystone , August 1993, "it is meant to be worn anytime . . . to be fun - fun to look at and fun to wear." This necklace is meant to be seen
