AN ANTIQUE TUDUC PRAYER RUG, TRANSILVANIA approx: 6ft.7in. x 3ft.11in.(201cm. x 119cm.) The field with three multicoloured floral medallions surrounded by angular leafy vine, palmettes and floral sprays. Ivory mihrab above with similar design. In stylised open rosette and angular floral vine border between lattice, zig-zag and plain stripes. This rug has slight wear to the top pile. Very good colour combination. Beautifully drawn early Anatolian rugs design. Ends with short fringes, secured. Selvages original. In general this rug is in very good usable condition. Woven on wool foundation. Very attractive. Born in Transylvania, Theodor Tuduc (1888-1983) was a Romanian rug restorer and famous rug forger. He made high quality, exact reproductions of antique rugs and passed them off as authentic. His technical skills were so refined that many of his, now famous, Tuduc rugs, were acquired by prestigious museums. Some of Tuduc’s reproductions include Transylvanian, Lotto, Chintamani and Spanish armorial carpets. Tuduc rugs were such great and artistic carpets that they have ironically become highly valuable by antique carpet collectors.
